headspace family campaign

When the Christmas holidays didn't go as planned: Free and fast help for parents with concerns about their child

Noisy arguments, worrying silences and sleepless nights.

For many parents and caregivers of troubled youth, the Christmas holidays have been anything but calm and cozy. On the contrary, it can be a really difficult period where the child's situation has been in stark contrast to the expectation of “the most enjoyable time of the year”.

And then it's straight back to everyday life, even though the need for support, sparring and someone to talk to is perhaps greater than ever.

headspace Family is an offer for them.

Parents and relatives of young people who are not thriving can get help and advice to deal with challenges big and small - free, confidential and with no waiting time.

Intent topic is too big or small

Our trained counselors and volunteers are ready to talk about everything from school refusal and divorce issues to if your child has a psychiatric diagnosis, has an addiction or is self-harming. And help you with concrete tools and new perspectives.

Trine Hammershøy, Director of headspace Denmark, says:

”We know that when a young person is not feeling well, it affects the whole family. Especially during holiday periods, when the lack of fixed structures and intense togetherness can be an amplifying factor. With headspace Family, we offer a place where you as a parent can get help and concrete tools to deal with your child's challenges, your own concerns and the family as a whole - when you need it and on your terms.”

What's special about headspace Family is that the volunteer counselors all have their own experiences of being close to a young person in distress and can therefore contribute with understanding and hope.

Nationwide conversation services - physical and online

headspace Family is a nationwide offer where parents and relatives can get online conversations, telephone counseling and physical conversations - individually and in groups - in five locations in Denmark: Helsingør, Guldborgsund, Faaborg, Aarhus and Holbæk.

In the first year of the initiative, headspace Family has helped up to 500 families and relatives in over 1,100 conversations. A preliminary evaluation shows that:

- 9 out of 10 caregivers gain hope and new ways of seeing their challenges

- 8 out of 10 feel that they are given concrete tools and methods to help them

- 8 out of 10 gain new knowledge on how to take better care of themselves
