What is headspace?

headspace is a counseling service based on you and what you need to talk about. We are not psychologists, but believe that you know best what you need and we help you by asking the right questions. Most counselors are volunteers of all ages who are passionate about helping and listen without judgment.

All counselors receive training in counseling techniques and legislation, and we support bridging to other services if necessary. headspace is accredited by RådgivningsDanmark, and we follow the counseling process closely to ensure that it works. The counseling is health-promoting and preventive – we are here to listen.”

Behind HEADSPACE
headspace came to Denmark following the Australian model in 2013

Sharing experiences, knowledge and inspiration with the rest of the world has been a key focus for us from the beginning.

The first tentative steps towards establishing headspace Denmark were taken The Psychiatry Network’s annual Psychiatry Summit in 2011, the theme of which was ‘young people and mental wellbeing’. Headspace leader Nick Prendergast attended from Melbourne, Australia, where he presented the Australian youth counseling service headspace to the 1,000 participants at the summit.

Two years later, headspace Denmark came into being as an initiative under Foreningen Det Sociale Netværk, and the first six headspace centers opened in Denmark in 2013.

Since then, the Danish model of headspace has inspired e.g. Iceland, Israel, Ireland, Germany and the Netherlands to open their localized versions of  similar offers because we can see that it works to give young people someone to talk to.

headspace in Denmark

Headspace centers are led by a local center manager who often manages 2-3 centers. Each center is run by a small team of paid youth advisors, who are supported by a large number of volunteers who have all undergone internal headspace training.

The municipalities that co-finance headspace have a “seconded” employee in headspace, and most regions have an employee from psychiatry attached to the centers.

This structure ensures that there is always someone from either the municipality or region who can bridge to other services if necessary.

Initiative that makes a difference

We work with concrete initiatives such as choosing a job and education through What can I become? and dropout prevention. In addition, we collaborate with the country’s dioceses on mindU, which focuses on mental and social vulnerability in confirmation preparation. At the same time, we strengthen the youth advisors’ skills for conversations on relevant topics.
